Today I hosted #mathsmeetglyn. I was thence pleased that lxxx maths teachers turned upwardly on a Sabbatum morn to consider Don Steward's presentation. I was besides chuffed to lastly encounter the human being who makes the vivid resources that I role inward my classroom everyday.Don spoke for 2 together with one-half hours together with inward that fourth dimension he covered huge amounts of fascinating mathematics. I thoroughly enjoyed Don's presentations. I specially liked a minute correct at the halt when nosotros were all working difficult on an enlargement problem. The thought was that nosotros enlarged a triangle alongside scale constituent 2 from betoken 1, together with then enlarged that icon alongside scale constituent 2 from betoken 2. Then nosotros had to honor the centre of enlargement of our 2nd icon from the master triangle. We did this for a reveal of questions together with started to notice patterns. None of us could figure out what was causing the pattern, simply together with then Don said something virtually how nosotros were all getting a lot of exercise of drawing enlargements. And that was when it all barbarous into place... Much of the generalising that Don talked virtually was quite advanced, simply it all involved lots of exercise - ie developing fluency - inward the steps leading upwardly to generalisation. We were practising enlargements without fifty-fifty realising nosotros were practising! We were engaged because it was intriguing - because it was leading somewhere interesting. Clever, eh?
After the event, 20 of us had a lovely tiffin at La Familia.
Nothing beats dependent area noesis CPD. It was similar a large maths lesson inward a room total of people who dearest maths.
